Why upgrade? 

Aside from the general condition of your computer, its hardware specifications affect how well it will perform. Like a vehicle’s horsepower or average MPG, these metrics tell you what a device is capable of. For example, a computer with less RAM may slow down when you open too many webpages at once, just as a car with a small engine would when climbing a hill.

When should you upgrade?

There’s a simple rule of thumb: if a computer can’t run your practice management software (PMS) and Windows 11, it’s time to start shopping for a replacement. Most computers in your practice will need to access patient data at some point, so they should be able to handle your PMS. Plus, PMS tends to have high operating requirements, which dictate the hardware specs a program needs to run properly. A computer that meets these requirements will be well-suited for most office tasks.

Our other suggestion isn’t just a good idea—it’s the law! In October 2025, Windows will end support for its current version in favor of Windows 11. No support means no security patches, which makes your practice vulnerable to cyberattacks. Thus, practices that don’t (or can’t) update will no longer be HIPAA compliant.

Are there any exceptions to this rule?

Yes. Specialized dental software puts higher demands on computers, so make sure you check the operating requirements of any new programs you purchase.

Your computer setup may also strain your devices. Operatory room PCs often project onto multiple monitors, which requires more RAM. The same goes for computers that support dental equipment, like CBCT or 2D Pano machines.
